Girls Spring Sports are in Bloom

By: Shannon Kellogg

Eisenhower girls are feeling the heat now that spring sports are in full swing. The softball, track, and trap teams have been working hard, breaking records, improving their skills, and building strong foundations for years to come. Although team records may not been perfect, the girls are enjoying the beautiful weather and creating lasting memories with their team mates.

In track and field, Eisenhower girls have had a fantastic season so far with their team record being 4 – 1. The Squire sat down with junior and team captain Delaney Nizzi to get the details. According to Nizzi, there are nine ladies that have qualified for the district track meet on May 19th at Slippery Rock University. Senior and team captain Terry Lee Talasky has qualified in all four of her events which include the 100 meter dash, the 200 meter dash, the 400 meter dash, and the 4 by 400 relay. Delaney has qualified in both of the hurdle events (100 hurdles and 300 hurdles) as well as the 4 by 400 relay with Talasky. The remaining two legs of the 4 by 400 relay are run by sophomores Caroline Smelko and Patricia Bortz. The 4 by 100 relay team of Emily Wheeler, Cameran Edwards, Catrina Edwards, and Patricia Bortz will also be advancing to districts along with Currie Hultman in javelin and Alexi Milburn in the high jump.

On the softball field, the underclassmen are filling the spots. With a total of one senior and two juniors, this year’s softball team has been training up plenty of underclassmen with high hopes for years to come. According to varsity catcher and sophomore Shelby Kuzminski, the team has lost all of their games so far but are working towards a win. She told The Squire, “We’re expecting to make less mistakes as the season goes on.” Many of the girls on the team are first year players and freshman but they’ve come a long way this year. Mastering essential skills and getting experience on the field is the main focus of this season in order to build a strong team for upcoming seasons.

The girls trap team this year is small but mighty, also with many first or second year competitors. The team record for regular season closed on Tuesday May 1st, at 3 wins and 2 losses.  None of the girls have shot a perfect (25 out of 25) yet this season but juniors Kalli Tomassoni and Sydney Welker have come the closest with a few 20 out of 25’s. According to Kalli, teams for states have not yet been announced.

The sky is the limit for our female Eisenhower athletes and were hoping for more great results as the spring season winds down. Come out and support your Lady Knights at one of the spring sporting events before the season ends.
