Boys Sports Jump into Spring

By: Logan Bellardo

March first marked the first official day of boys spring sports at Eisenhower. The boys spring sports here at EHS include trap, track, and baseball. All of the sports have done well in the previous seasons and hope to continue the success.

Last season, Steven Haner, Jon Shelton, and Chris Kibbey went on to compete at the state trap tournament. Despite losing Steven and Jon, Chris and others are hopeful and believe that they can still be a good team and have even more trap shooters move on to states.

The track team had great success last season, too. Even though nobody from the boys track team moved on to states, many young boys did end up qualifying and competing in districts. The boys expect the same success and hope that some will qualify for states. The Squire has recently met up with Squire staff member and track star, Owen Nizzi.

The Squire: How long have you been for doing track for?

Owen Nizzi: I have been participating for Ike Men’s Track & Field since seventh grade.

TS: What events do you do?

ON: I personally run both hurdle races, participate in long jump, and throw javelin. I will pretty much do whatever coach needs me to do.

TS: How have practices been going so far?

ON: They have been going swell; we, as, a team are making great strides.

TS: What are you most excited for this season?

ON: The invites that we attended, also running hurdles. Remember, walking is an option. TS: Are there any athletes, including you, who could make it to districts and states?

ON: Yes, I feel this year we have a very strong team with lots of depth, and we should be able to do well and have a lot of qualifiers.

Last season, the most successful spring sport team was the baseball team. They won the school’s first District 10 title in ten years. This year, they have been in the gym more, and hope to take advantage of the newly structured region of which they are now a part. Many players from last season’s team are returning and they have even higher goals than last year; hoping this year to win a state playoff game.

Good luck to all Eisenhower spring sports, and go and support your boys teams this spring!
