Promposals; The Bird Dance of the Human Species

By: Easton Fitzgerald

What makes a promposal unforgettable; The creativity, the effort, or the risk getting told no in front of a crowd of people? In recent years, asking someone to prom has turned into more than just a question. It has become a performance that is often planned for days for even weeks to ensure a good promposal. There’s also the pressure of being funnier, bigger, or more original than everyone else. Whether it’s a simple poster that the person can relate to, or a front door song performance, promposals are a serious step on your way to getting a date to prom.

Promposals haven’t always been this big of a deal. A few years ago, asking someone to prom could be as simple as a quick conversation or text. Now, it’s often something people plan out in advance, sometimes with help from friends, decorations, or even a full crowd watching. A big reason for this change is social media. When videos of creative or over-the-top promposals get posted online, they set a new standard and make others feel like they must do something just as impressive.

For some people, that pressure isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It can make the experience more exciting and give students a chance to be creative. Planning a promposal can be pretty fun, especially when it involves inside jokes or something meaningful between two people.

The Squire asked professional lady admirer, Bryceton Wilkins, to describe a promposal he has done himself. Wilkins responded, “The one I did was a promposal mixed with a promise ring. So, I asked my girlfriend to prom and gave her a promise ring all at the same time. It was nice, fun, and unique.”

Now for the underclassmen attending their first prom, most of you probably have no idea what to do for your promposal. The Squire also asked professional lady admirer Bryceton Wilkins what advice he would give to someone planning a promposal. Wilkins added, “Don’t be basic and do something outside the box.”

So, as prom gets closer, think about what kind of promposal fits you. You can go all out with a big, dramatic setup, or keep it simple and still make it meaningful. Just remember that no one really cares if your sign has the perfect pun or if the moment feels awkward. At the end of the day, the most important thing is to try and make someone happy. Good luck out there, Eisenhower.
