For this year’s Kindness Week, presented by Eisenhower Middle High School’s Student Council, we had many fun activities and different spirit days planned throughout the week of February 9 through the 13. Whilst students and staff had a different theme every day to follow, they also had a “kindness challenge” to do each day.
Starting the week, Monday was a Pajama Day, with the kindness challenge of “Do a good deed.” On Tuesday, it was “Show your love for EHS and Wear Blue and Gold,” where Student Council offered face paintings and tattoos during middle school lunch with the kindness challenge of “Make a new connection – sit with someone new at lunch.”
Additionally, on Wednesday, it was “wear your favorite jersey,” and, this day, Student Council visited the staff at school throughout the day with a “kindness cart” to show gratitude for all they do for the school. This day’s kindness challenge was to add a link to the school-wide Kindness Chain, where the students wrote notes on a piece of paper that are encouraging and, in the end, arranged them together to make a long chain out of paper.
Furthermore, Thursday was “wear western attire,” with the kindness challenge being, “Share the Love – Make a Valentine for a friend or for someone at the Rouse Home.”
The last spirit day encouraged students to wear their Kindness Week shirt that was offered to be purchased as a fundraiser for Student Council, or they could wear red or pink. To keep the positive spirit going, students received festive glasses or beads before school. A special twist of that day was the Kindness Café, where during eighth period, students who were nominated by staff got to go into the cafeteria, with a friend of their choice, and they got to enjoy the fun activities that Student Council put together. This day’s kindness challenge was to fill the “I” in KIND. The student body got to write a kind act they did that week on a sticky note and added it to the poster board to make a giant “I” on the board that Student Council made.
When The Squire asked Mrs. Lobdell, Student Council Advisor to share some positive changes she has seen throughout the student body over the years she has overseen Kindness Week, she said that “Over the years, I’ve noticed students becoming more aware of how their actions affect others. There’s more inclusiveness, more encouragement between peers, and a stronger sense of community. Even after Kindness Week ends, those positive behaviors often continue, which shows how impactful it can be.”
As EMHS finishes up another successful Kindness Week, we have Mrs. Lobdell and the Student Council members to thank for a fun and eventful week, in advocation for positivity.
