With Valentine’s Day approaching, romance is in the air. During recent decades, the film industry produced quite a few memorable romance films. For the people who do not particularly enjoy sappy romance movies, there is a fun alternative that combines love and humor in the form of romantic comedies, also known as rom coms.
Rom coms were very popular in the early 2000’s, and there are a few hit movies frequently played, even twenty years later. Adam Sandler was featured in the movie, 50 First Dates, where he could express his comedic role while falling in love with a girl. In another classic, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey go through obstacles in their developing relationship, while trying to keep their work lives balanced. There are plenty of other options for a good laugh, but with the romantic plot that all people love.
The Squire interviewed a EMHS senior, Kadence Anderson, to find out more about some of her personal rom com opinions. We asked her what her favorite romantic comedy was, and she replied, “I am a sucker for a good romance story, so it’s hard to choose one because there are so many good movies out there. If I had to choose one, though, it would be The Wedding Planner. It is such a sweet movie, and I could watch it on repeat and still feel the same about it.” Kadence mentioned a few good streaming sites for rom coms, sharing that she mostly watches Netflix, as they seem to have the biggest variety of movies, although Hulu, Paramount+, Disney+, and HBO Max also have great varieties.
Kadence agrees that the early 2000’s had some of the best rom coms. She explained, “I feel like that generation is when a lot of popular films came out, and I can see why. They all have heartfelt, dreamy story lines and characters that most people relate to.” Lastly, The Squire asked who Kadence’s favorite actor/actress is in rom com films. She is a fan of Heath Ledger, featured in 10 Things I Hate About You. Kadence says, “He is an amazing actor and aced all his roles. Bonus, he is so gorgeous. I loved a lot of the movies he’s played in.”
