Tackling the Super Bowl

By: Jared Beers

After a long regular season and through hard-fought games, the famous Super Bowl rolls around for two NFL teams who have earned a spot in the big playoff game. This year it was on February 2, 2020 in Miami, Florida.

The Super Bowl, surprisingly, is a relatively new competition. The very first year it was played was January 15, 1967 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California. Since that game, two teams have continued the tradition each year. To win the Super Bowl, a team must first make it to the big game. That’s no easy task. The first goal of any NFL team is to survive the grueling 16-game regular season schedule with a worthy record. Usually, 10 or more wins are required to make the playoffs, but 10 wins are no guarantee for a playoff berth.

The NFL’s structure also has an effect on which teams reach the post season. The NFL consists of two 16-team conferences, the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC), which are subdivided into four four-team divisions (North, South, East, and West). Each division winner earns an automatic trip to the playoffs. In addition, the two non-division winners with the best overall record get in as wild card teams.

After winning the Super Bowl, the champions get to hoist one of the most famous trophies in professional sports, the Lombardi trophy. It is a sterling silver football in a tilted position atop a pyramid-like stand. The trophy is named for Vince Lombardi, the former Green Bay Packers coach who led the Packers to victory in Super Bowls I and II. Originally named the World Championship Game Trophy, the trophy was renamed the Lombardi trophy in 1971, following Lombardi’s death.

This year’s game was played by the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers. Both teams are known for being very good on both sides of the ball, making for a great game.

Experts predicted Kansas City to be most likely to win, but the Super Bowl is never a totally predictable game, since both teams are always so skilled .The Squire polled our followers on social media to see who they thought would win. 58% of our followers believed the Chiefs would win, and 42% predicted the 49ers would come through with an upset.

As expected by many football fans, the Chiefs won the Superbowl on Sunday February 2, 2020. The score was 31-20, and Patrick Mahomes, a Chiefs player won the MVP award of the game, a very big accomplishment for such a young player and team. Congratulations to the Kansas City Chiefs. The Squire is very excited to see who makes the cut next year.
