For many students, asking somebody to prom can be a very exciting and scary task. If you know who you want to ask, but have no clue how, do not worry, you can learn some promposal skills from The Squire to score the perfect date.
First, you have to find the right time to ask. After some research, it seems there is a perfect time, if you try to plan the special moment no more than eight weeks and no less than six weeks before the big night. Then of course, when asking someone to prom, you have to see if they have a date they are already going with. If they are not already taken, then you can move forward to the next step – finding out about what they like and what they do not like, so that you can make the promposal personal. Next, it is time to pop the question. While verbally asking someone is fine, many high school students try to come up with clever ways to ask their date. Try tying in food, flowers, or signs to give it a little extra personality. People also assume men are the ones that are responsible to ask their date to prom, but don’t forget that it is just fine for girls to ask guys as well.
If you still do not have an idea of how you want to ask the big question, here are some ways you can ask that will for sure score you a perfect date. Try spelling a promposal with their favorite food. If you know they love a certain food, incorporate it into your promposal. Spell out “Prom?” with pizza toppings or their favorite candy. You can also give them food in a box, like a cake or cookies and write, “Will you go to prom with me?” on the inside. If you are a musical person, you can try writing a song for your date. It does not have to be anything hard; you can even just change the lyrics of a popular song to include your promposal. Make sure your song is the kind of music they like before you start writing.
The Squire sat down with senior Tess Morningstar and junior Drew Williams to ask them some questions about promposing. Drew shared that depending on what they like or what they are interested in, you have to pick something that means something to them. When asked about girls asking their date, he mentioned that he believes “…that it’s the man’s duty, unless they go to a different school.” Promposals can be scary, and Drew agreed, saying that the worst part is not knowing how they are going to respond. He also shared that the worst way you can ask a girl is over the phone.
This year, Tess plans to ask her boyfriend who has already graduated, so she believes it is acceptable to ask him to prom since he cannot ask her. She mentioned that the worst way to be asked is if they do not ask in person or if the boy does not put in any effort into it. She shared “… you can never get too carried away.”
Even though asking someone to prom can be stressful, it all will be worth it when the big night comes to have fun and dance with your friends. For more ideas for the perfect promposal, you can also try looking online or going to Pinterest.
