The Squire: What are your goals for this upcoming track season?
Laney Belcher: My goals are to break 1 minute in the 400, medal at districts, and make it to states.
TS: Why did you choose to attend IUP?
LB: I chose to go to IUP because I wanted to major in interior design and not many schools offer an interior design program around here. When I visited everyone was so welcoming and they have a lot of strong programs, so I can see myself staying focused and on track for earning my degree.
TS: What are your plans for after graduating college?
LB: My plans after I graduate college are to use my degree and become a designer and start designing houses around North and South Carolina, where I plan to design and create beautiful homes for people to live in.
TS: What are your favorite memories from high school?
LB: My favorite memories from high school are making it to states with the girls’ basketball team, going to states my first year in cross country, being a part of the track and field team, making food with Keeley and Ella, school dances, being a part of student sections for sports, and getting to see and spend time with all my friends every day!
TS: What has helped you to succeed in school while being busy with sports, clubs, and jobs?
LB: Balancing school with sports, clubs, and a job has helped me grow and succeed. I’ve learned strong time management skills by staying organized and making the most of my time, while also prioritizing my schoolwork even when my schedule is busy. Being involved in activities has built my work ethic, teaching me discipline, consistency, and how to push through challenges. I stay motivated by my goals for the future and have support from coaches, teachers, and family who encourage me to do my best. Overall, these experiences have made me more responsible, determined, and prepared for future challenges.
TS: What advice would you give to underclassmen?
LB: Work hard, stay focused, and have fun.
TS: What sport that you have played has been your favorite and why?
LB: My favorite sport has been track and field. It’s my favorite because it’s an individual and a team sport and the outcome you want is your responsibility because you have to be willing to work hard and give it all you got every time. I also love how connected you get with the team; the track team is like family to me and having such a strong bond with everyone makes me look forward to going to practice everyday
