Are you curious about if we will have six more weeks of winter? Every year Punxsutawney Phil pops out of his hole and never knows what he is about to see! This tradition is very special and well known. It is because everyone likes to read about the weather on the news, also, if Phil sees his shadow, we will have six more weeks of winter. Do you believe Phil the Groundhog is right? Groundhogs Day only happens once a year so, if you have never heard about it before, you should look into it! Let’s find out all about Groundhogs Day.
Did you know that every year on February 2nd Punxsutawney Phil (the groundhog), comes out of his hole in Punxsutawney, PA? If he sees his shadow, we will have six more weeks of winter. If he doesn’t see his shadow, we will have an early spring. Do you think Phil will see his shadow this year? A lot of people argue over this simple tradition.
A lot of people ask, “Where does Phil make his yearly prediction?” Phil makes his yearly prediction in Punxsutawney, PA. At daybreak Phil awakens from his burrow on Gobblers Knob and either predicts 6 more weeks of winter or not. Mr. Stimmel, a current teacher here at Eisenhower was interviewed last week to ask a couple questions about Groundhogs Day. We asked Mr. Stimmel, “Why do you think Groundhogs day is so popular?” He replied, “I think Groundhogs day is so popular because a lot of people watch the news and are interested in the weather”.
Punxsutawney Phil has been around for many years now. We would like to know how old Mr. Stimmel thinks Phil is. “Phil has to be the oldest Groundhog around; Phil has been the same Groundhog for all 135 years which is 15 times longer than the upper end of Groundhogs typical lifespan. That’s an old Groundhog”. That is crazy that a Groundhog can live for that long!
Many people celebrate Groundhogs Day in different ways. When Phil wakes up and comes out of his hole, a lot of people gather around to watch and celebrate the results.
