As the seasons are changing, winter sports are starting up here at Eisenhower. For girls, Eisenhower offers cheerleading and basketball throughout the winter months. Both teams have been preparing for their seasons and working hard since November Eighteenth, and they are very excited that the season is now moving along.
The girls’ basketball team had a remarkable season last year, considering their lack of experienced players. They are hoping to continue their hard work as a team and come out with some big wins this season. The Squire sat down with senior captain, Emiley Wheeler, to talk about how the season has been going so far. Emiley shared that the team is looking good this year and that they have a lot of upcoming freshman. She also stated they have a “Pretty solid varsity team that has been playing together for a long time.” Playing with the same teammates for a long time always helps out when it comes to team work and playing games.
When The Squire asked Emiley what some of her personal goals were for the season, she said her main goals were to “Be a good captain that pushes the younger girls to make them better and stronger at basketball.” Emiley would like to see the team work hard throughout the whole season so they can go to playoffs and bring home a win. When asked what the team’s biggest strengths were, she said, “We have three guards who can handle the ball really well and we have three posts that are all strong in the paint.”
What’s a basketball game without a little school spirit? The Squire also talked to sophomore cheerleader, Abbey Fredrick, about how their season is looking at a glance. The varsity and junior varsity teams have a total of eleven girls on the cheer squad. Abbey shared with us that they will only be cheering at nine of the home games for the boys’ basketball team this season and will not be traveling to any away games.
The Squire would like to thank Emiley and Abbey for sharing some of their goals for the season, and giving The Squire the ultimate insight. The Journalism staff wants to wish the girls basketball team and the cheerleading squad the best of luck and safe travels to and from all games this snowy season. Make sure you try to stop by to watch some basketball games this winter and help cheer on both our Knights and Lady Knights!
