Girls Winter Sports in Action

By: Austin Hanson

Girls’ winter sports are well underway this year, having eclipsed the halfway point of the season. With that comes the thought and aspirations of each team/player focused on making the playoffs. The EHS Competitive Cheer team has also been motivated on placing well at their respective events, as well as cheering on the boys basketball team at home games.

Girls’ basketball has had a hot start to the season, posting an impressive 12-7 overall record and 7-5 region record. Along with the hot start, the Lady Knights have had some notable headlines throughout the season, with senior Lainey Font scoring her one-thousandth career point, and senior captain Clara Steinberg approaching the EHS all-time scoring record. The Squire asked Steinberg how she feels the first half of the season has gone so far, and she responded, “Over the past few games we’ve started to play together as a team and that has shown.” She also added, “Having multiple one-thousand-point scorers is a huge benefit for our team. It gives us reliable scoring options and makes us difficult to defend.” As region play continues, the Lady Knights will look to continue their strong season with sure to be tough games. Steinberg added, “We know we will be facing strong competition, but we also understand what we’re capable of when we play together.”

As a result of not having their own girls wrestling team, both EHS and Warren have a joint team, competing at events together. However, this hasn’t affected their performance as at every tournament they have had a top ten finish and have also had multiple podium finishers. Wrestling, although considered a team sport, is as much of an individual sport as it is a team. Junior Bryn Lindell added, “We all have to count on one another that we are putting forth our best efforts for not only ourselves, but the team as well.” She also explained how their practice environment is and how they all push each other to get better. Lindell added, “Wrestling, although individual, can’t be done without a team.” As they head onto the postseason, they will be looking to improve their technique and improve their moves.

Additionally, along with having a cheer team this year, EHS has their own competitive cheer team, competing at various events this season. The Squire asked junior Nevaeh Davis how she thinks the season has gone so far, she responded, “Our competitive cheer team performance has been average this year, and we’re constantly looking to improve.” She also shared her thoughts about their upcoming events, “We have two competitions coming up, and are hoping to get better scores and have fun.” Along with competitive cheer events, the cheer team also cheers at the boys’ basketball home games. Davis commented on switching between the two, saying that it’s sometimes more difficult because competitive cheer is more involved.

The Squire thanks Steinberg, Lindell, and Davis for their time, and wishes them and their teams the best of luck for the rest of the season!
