The National Football League (NFL) season kicked off on Thursday, September 4, in which the defending Super Bowl champion, Philadelphia Eagles, hosted the Dallas Cowboys. Since then, a quarter of the regular season has passed and there have been so many unexpected wins, losses, plays, breakouts, and injuries.
After week five of the NFL, the current division leaders in the American Football Conference (AFC) are the Bills, Steelers, Colts, and Chargers. The National Football Conference (NFC) division leaders are the Eagles, Lions, Buccaneers, and 49ers. Every team has suffered a loss, so there are no longer any undefeated teams remaining. There is one team that has yet to win a game, which is the New York Jets.
So far, this season, there have been some very exciting games, some of which had crazy endings. One of these games was between the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Jets in week one. During the game, quarterbacks, Aaron Rodgers and Justin Fields both had great offensive games for the opposite team they played for last year. Rodgers and the Steelers won this revenge game 34-32 after kicking a game winning field goal with a little over a minute left. Another exhilarating game came in week five, on Monday Night Football, when the Kansas City Chiefs played the Jacksonville Jaguars. After a very back and forth game, Jaguars quarterback, Trevor Lawrence fell to the ground twice before gaining his footing and running in a one-yard touchdown with less than 30 seconds left, leading the Jaguars to a 31-28 win.
In week three, the Philadelphia Eagles won a nailbiter against the Los Angeles Rams after falling behind 26-7. The Eagles came back and went up one point before the Rams were able to put themselves in field goal range with seconds left. Eagles defender Jordan Davis was able to block the potential game winning kick and return for a touchdown, raising the Eagles to a 33-26 win. The Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys week four game probably would have been the most thrilling game of the week had there been a different result. After a combined 31 fourth quarter points, the game went to overtime and that is where the excitement ended. Both teams kicked a field goal in overtime and the game ended in a 40-40 tie.
The most exciting game so far was the week one Sunday Night Football game between the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills. After being counted out by many viewers because the Bills were down 15 points with under five minutes left, they made their comeback. They scored 16 unanswered points including the game winning field goal as time expired to win 41-40.
The Squire interviewed football fan, Gavin Reynolds, and asked him who he believed would win the Super Bowl, and he said, “I believe either the Eagles will run it back because of the depth and stars they have. Or, the Bills, who have the best quarterback currently.”
Along with these thrilling moments, there have also been some breakout players. One of the best quarterbacks statistically this season has been Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams. He currently leads the league in passing yards and is second in passing touchdowns. The leader in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns so far this season has been Jonathan Taylor of the Indianapolis Colts. These players have been making a strong impact offensively.
When asked who he thinks has had the most impact on his team, Reynolds said, “I think Puka Nacua has been a game changer and has helped the Rams win games, as he leads the league in receiving.” As stated, Nacua has had an amazing statistical season so far and is on pace to break the record for receiving yards in a season.
Defensively, some of the best players have been Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker, Devin Lloyd, who leads the league in interceptions, Miami Dolphins linebacker, Jordyn Brooks, who leads the league in tackles, Denver Broncos linebacker, Nik Bonito, who leads the league in sacks, and Minnesota Vikings cornerback, Isaiah Rodgers who leads the league in defensive touchdowns.
So far, it has been an eventful 2025 NFL season. Tune in on Thursdays, Sundays, Mondays, to see the action yourself. All stats for this article were taken as of October 8, 2025, or the end of Week five. Use this link https://www.espn.com/nfl/standings/_/view/playoff to view current standings.
