Spring Swings into Action: A Review of the Local Golf Scene

By: Michael Palmieri

As spring rolls in, so does golf season! With seasonal weather in northwestern Pennsylvania, there isn’t much time with nice weather for golf. So, the question is, where to spend your time this summer? Well, The Squire is here to help you try and answer that! The local public courses are as follows: Cable Hollow, Blueberry Hill & Jackson Valley.

Cable Hollow in Russell, PA was recently purchased, and plans were quickly implemented to make changes to the course. These changes have made the golfing experience at Cable Hollow much more interesting. For example, hole five has been made into a rendition of the famous hole 17 at TPC Sawgrass, creating a par three, with a tee shot over water.

There have been changes at the restaurant end as well, creating a whole new menu with great food. My personal favorite part about this golf course is the course itself. My favorite hole is hole number nine, a long par five with your tee shot having to clear a pond. Overall, the experience at Cable is very enjoyable, from a welcoming staff and great golf course intriguing me from hole to hole to a good place to sit down and eat after a great round. Cable Hollow is a great choice this summer.

Blueberry Hills in Scandia, PA was also recently just bought by local entrepreneurs, the current owners of Warren eatery, “The Plaza.” With the first changes being made to the Blueberry Hill restaurant,it is obvious that The Douvlos have a specialty for the culinary arts. The golf course has not been updated since the new ownership but still serves as a great option this summer. Overall, the experience is enjoyable, especially after the round if you stop in the restaurant and get some great food, complete with the famous Plaza pie.

Jackson Valley is a very scenic golf course near Warren, PA, with large hills and beautiful landscapes. The Squire asked student and avid golfer, Bryce Coleson, what he thought of Jackson, and he shared, “I think it’s a little bit above average and very affordable. The carts are nice, the greens are a perfect speed” With the layout of Jackson, golf can get very interesting, due to the tight fairways and the very hilly links. The restaurant is very good, according to Coleson, “It’s some of the best food around!” Overall, with the courses’ amazing landscapes and affordable pricing, Jackson is another excellent local golf choice.

This summer, try giving any or all of our local courses a try. With a good look at these courses, it’s safe to say that any of these offer great golfing and delicious food.
