PBIS Empowers Students to Thrive and Succeed

By: Cole Kell

The PBIS reward system is a strategy that Eisenhower has been using to create a positive school environment. The school has an app that teachers use to give students points for positive behavior. In the app, which they can access through ClassLink, students can see how many points they have, and any comments teachers have put in for earning those points. The categories in which points can be earned include Integrity, Kindness, and Engagement (IKE). There are stores created by teachers where students can use their points to purchase whatever the store has that interests them.

Mrs. Richardson is part of the PBIS team at Eisenhower and helps set up raffles, among other PBIS-related activities.  She shared some information with The Squire on the PBIS system.

The Squire: How can students earn more points?

Mrs. Richardson: Students can earn more points by showing Integrity, Kindness, and Engagement in class.  Also, sometimes teachers forget to give weekly points, so kindly reminding students of the weekly point goal is helpful, too!

The Squire: What is your role in the PBIS group?

Mrs. R: I am the PBIS teacher coordinator.  I use the app often and help students and teachers who have questions about the app or how it works. I also fill the orders when students or teachers order items and cash in points for prizes. I set up raffles, too.

The Squire: What goals does the PBIS group have for the year?

Mrs. R: The PBIS group’s goal is to earn Tier 1 fidelity this year.  To achieve this goal, we have to have PBIS implemented, and students and staff must know what PBIS stands for, including the acronym IKE!

The Squire: How can students and staff become more involved?

Mrs. R: Students can be more involved by sharing ideas for PBIS rewards with the team, participating in PBIS events, and checking out the app for points awarded and store and raffle items available.  Staff can be more involved by logging on and giving students points and participating in PBIS events.

The Squire: What fun events do you have planned for the second semester?

Mrs. R: We have a black light event planned for middle school and a corn hole tournament planned for high school for second semester.  We also are planning to host an honor roll breakfast and invite parents in to be included in the celebration!

If you have any questions about PBIS or how to use the app, ask Mrs. Richardson or any teacher in the school. They will be more than happy to help you and answer any questions you have. The Squire thanks Mrs. Richardson for her time and for teaching us about the PBIS rewards system, and we hope students are eager to earn and use points!
