For this week’s spirit week Eisenhower’s student council decided to make everyday special for the students that attend the middle high school. Due to the week cut short with no school on Friday February sixteenth, the themes were, Blue and Gold, Hawaiian, Red and Pink, and Pajama Day. Each one of these days has been full of caring and memorable moments for the students, with many laughs and challenges throughout the week. The Squire had many moments on camera, from everyone’s apparel to the crazy challenges that were so amazingly put together. The true goal of this week was to promote kindness and love.
The Squire interviewed freshman Madelyn Morrison, class president, and student council member.
The Squire: What really promoted the idea for this week of kindness and fun?
Morrison: As some students and staff may remember Student Council hosted a kindness week last year. Everyone tries to find ways to bring pep and spirit to the school in the best way possible. Since Valentines Day fell during this week everyone decided it would be great to show love and appreciation to other students and faculty with kindness.
TS: How do you think the things that student council has done for us this year has benefited the students overall?
Morrison: I would like to think that student council really improves moral in the school overall. Just in the past couple of days I have noticed more energy and inclusion from my peers during this spirit week. Student council does not just focus on the student body though, we also show the teachers the respect and appreciation that they deserve. Throughout the week a group of student council members walked around with donuts and nice notes for teachers. I do believe that these small gestures make a big difference with the overall happiness in the school.
TS: What are some of the challenges that take place in planning events? For example, what were some of the challenges that you went through planning the events for this week?
Morrison: Some challenges that Student Council faces is trying to find themes/ challenges that appeal to both high school students and middle school students. Overall, I believe that student council does a great job finding events that are enjoyable but also competitive for all the grade levels. Another issue we sometimes run into is the dates that we try to plan things, the reason for this is because you do not want to plan things on special occasions like school dances. There are many things going on throughout the school year and we have to find dates that will work out for majority of the student body and staff.
TS: With many obstacles to go through with planning these events how is it difficult for you, to be both class president, and student council member?
Morrison: Most of the time it is mild when it comes to class presidency. Even though Student Council meetings only run every five weeks, many other members including myself enjoy going up frequently to plan. On weeks like kindness week, it can very chaotic and stressful when it comes to time management, but I try to do my best and be at both places.
TS: Can the student body expect more events like these soon?
Morrison: I would say that the student body can be looking forward to more events such as spirit weeks, fun challenges, and pep rallies in the near future.
To explain the week, we started off with Monday. Monday was Ike Pride Day; students were told to be their best Eisenhower Knights apparel to show their school spirit.
Tuesday: Tuesday was Hawaiian day; students were each given a singular lay when they walked through the doors in the morning. The point of the lays was to give small challenge through the students of each grade level called a Rochambeau challenge. The point of the challenge was to have the most lays in your grade level at the end of the day. Whoever had the most in each grade level challenged the other winners from each grade level and with our final winner in all grades was Caleb Jakubczak.
Wednesday: With February fourteenth falling on this Wednesday, the theme was wear red and pink to show your love. Many students showed their dedication to the theme with face paints, pinked out outfits, and many other contributions.
Thursday: Thursday was the fully rest day that everyone needed even after a short week, the theme was pajama day, wear your coziest pajamas and enjoy the relaxing day.
The Squire would like to thank all student council members for putting on this wonderful event for our school, we would also like to thank Madelyn for taking the time out of her schedule to answer our questions.
