Recent Events that Shook the Globe

By: Abe Wolf

In the constant whirlwind we live in, there are things constantly happening around us. We do not witness all of these events, but they happen, and we need to be aware of them as a community, nation, and world. Events that happen may not directly affect us, but they can indirectly shape our views of the world.

CRN guides us through ten events that have happened so far in 2023, in their article The 10 Biggest News Stories of 2023 (So Far). In one of their topics, Microsoft experienced a system outage that lasted five hours long on January 17 in North America, followed by a global outage on January 25. This outage spread throughout Microsoft Teams and Office 365. These events were followed by mailbox disruptions for users of Outlook in March and cloud service disruptions in early June, including a hack by a hacker known as “‘Anonymous Sudan,’” who wreaked havoc on Microsoft OneDrive. Microsoft may continue to see issues throughout the rest of the year as users’ frustrations continue to grow with the company. The Squire sat down with Mr. Taylor, a social studies teacher here at Eisenhower, to ask him about why this is important to our student body and what it says about Microsoft. He said, “This goes to show an overreliance on technology in our school district. When technology fails here, education then fails. This also goes to show that there are better software systems out there that can help teachers educate the students more efficiently.” The Squire thanks Mr. Taylor for taking his time to comment on the issue at hand.

Next is the coronation of King Charles III, according to InfoPlease. King Charles and Queen Camilla were crowned at Westminster Abbey in the “beginning of a new royal era in Britain.” Holy oil and an oath are part of the ritual that has happened since Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation back in 1953. Anti-royalists were present, according to InfoPlease, but, even with the mob, King Charles III swore to righteously serve all of Britain.

Finally, the hottest day on record ever was broken on July 4, 2023. The temperature is provided by InfoPlease, at 17.18 degrees Celsius, or 62.924 degrees Fahrenheit for the global air temperature. It beat the previous record from 2016 during the last El Nino cycle at 16.92 degrees Celsius, or 62.456 degreess Fahrenheit. This may say more for the future of climate change and the ever-increasing temperatures seen by the world.

As for many events and stories that took place so far this year, The Squire knows that these are what events and stories the people of Eisenhower should know on a wide scale. Keep reading The Squire for more information regarding school events, news, and human interest!
