This 2017 to 2018 winter sport season is coming to an end soon here at Eisenhower, but many of the teams here have achieved their goals this year. The girls’ cheerleading sure made some noise when Jayden Hayes scored his 1000th point against Youngsville during one of his last home games. The boys’ basketball team is just finishing their playoff run, and, although the girls’ basketball team did not make it to playoffs, their season ended on Tuesday, February 13, in a win against Tidioute. Winter cheerleading ended with the last games of the basketball and wrestling matches.
The Squire interviewed Rachel Frederick from girls’ basketball. She is currently a sophomore and she has been playing basketball ever since she was in kindergarten. Rachel shared that she did, in fact, enjoy the freshman and that they did work hard this season. She went on to say, “The freshmen did work hard like they have to. Of course, there are improvements to be made, but that also comes with the entire team as well.”
The Squire asked Rachel how she prepared herself in the off season, and she explained that she was already working hard in soccer and already felt in shape but it is always a challenge because basketball requires running fast for longer periods of time. She also mentioned some of the camps she attended over the summer, “Even though I couldn’t make it to all of them, the ones I did get to, I had so much fun. I feel like I always push myself playing and challenging my talent as well. The team bonding made me closer with the new freshmen, but also the rest of the team. All of us had so many laughs. The one thing that I will take away from my career is the bonding and family feeling I formed with my teammates.” Even though the girls’ basketball team did not move onto the playoffs, they worked very hard this season.
The Squire also interviewed Randy Mong from cheerleading. She told us that this is the first year she has done cheering. One of her personal goals was to try something new and, so far, it has been a success. She shared some of her goals, “I wanted to try something to new and meet some new people while doing it.” Though winter cheer is over, the entire cheer squad deserves a big thanks for showing school spirit each home game and match held at Eisenhower this season.
Overall, the winter sport season is coming to a close, but the boys’ basketball team is going forward to playoffs. Sadly, the girls’ basketball team did not move onto playoffs, but we are excited for what is in store for next season. What a great season for every sport here at Eisenhower! Continue working hard, athletes, it all pays off in the end.
