By: Louie Head

Winter is a time for cheer, joy, and giving! For high school students, it’s also time for the winter sports season to kick off! For the girls, basketball season is underway and the cheer squad is ready for another exciting season. The basketball team has high expectations, as they are senior heavy. The cheer squad is very excited as they brought in some male cheerleaders to help them with their throws and stunts.

The girls have opened their season with an impressive start. They went 2-0 at the county tip off, but fell the next week to give them their first loss. They have high hopes for the five seniors returning and expect big things from junior Kirsten Baran. The team has some tough region competition from Youngsville, Saegertown, Maplewood, Cochranton, and Union City. The girls finished their season last year with a less than perfect season but expect huge things this year. We now have a special interview from senior captain, Mallory Trumbull.

The Squire: What are the strong parts of your team?

Mallory Trumbull: Definitely the seniority that we have and the good leadership skills. We work really well together as a team and focus on the team aspect over individual accomplishments.

TS: What are some of the biggest games of the year?

MT: Youngsville games are always intense. Cambridge Springs will be a tough match-up, but we’re hoping we can come out on top.

TS: What are your expectations for this year?

MT: We always strive to make playoffs and winning our region would be a huge accomplishment as well.

TS: Thank you for your time and good luck this season!

The cheerleading team added three boys to their squad. They enjoy having them around to have them help with lift and stunts. To see them you can attend any home boys basketball game and see the cheerleaders kill the opponents with pep. The cheer captains this year are Kristen Honhart and Megan Lupole. They are excited to fill the gym with cheer each and every game. They are intent on getting the team rallied and pumped up to go out there and get the win!!

Good luck to all the girls participating in sports this season. Get out there and get peppy for your fellow classmates! Merry Christmas!
