Making Resolutions this New Year

By: Nicholas Stanley

A New Year’s resolution is a promise you make to yourself to start doing something new or stop bad habits starting the first day of the new year. For a lot of people, the new year is a fresh start to better yourself. For example, some people might try to eat healthier, read a certain number of books for the year, or try to get better grades and do better in school.

EMHS junior Layla Mohney answered a few questions from The Squire about her New Year’s resolution and how she is going to successfully complete her goals. She said that it took her quite a while to think of a resolution because she has never followed through with one, but eventually she was able to make a goal for the new year.

Mohney explained her resolution is to pass her Geometry class for the next two marking periods since she has failed the first two marking periods. She went on to share that she is going to do this by turning in her work on time and making sure she has no missing assignments. Later, Mohney proceeded to explain how her goal is long-term, “I want to pass for the rest of the year and that is longer than just a few days or weeks, which would be short-term.” Mohney then stated, “My goal is small because it is just one class it should be easy to pass and keep up on work and make sure, I have all my work turned in.”

The Squire conducted some research on some tips to help you reach your new year’s resolution. According to www.verywellhealth.com, a great tip for taking the first step in a resolution is to try a ‘start’ goal, which would mean instead of stopping something that you enjoy doing, try adding on or starting a new habit.

Lastly, Mohney explained the challenges she has faced and may continue to face is not understanding her work or getting behind. Mohney stated she could avoid these issues by “Turning in all my work on time and, when I miss a day, I will need to get my work from the day I missed so I am not falling behind.”

A New Year’s resolution can help anyone to start off the new year on the right foot. Whether you have been procrastinating a task or don’t know when to start working on a new goal, January 1 is the perfect day to start.
