Now that winter is in full swing, so are winter sports here at Eisenhower. EMHS boys’ winter sports consist of basketball and wrestling. With the recent addition of Youngsville this year, both the wrestling and basketball team have seen improvements with the new athletes and talent they bring.
Our boys’ basketball team currently has a winning record, winning most games by at least 20 points, while playing challenging opponents, like Warren. It appears at this time they are going to have a great year and be very successful moving forward.
Here at The Squire, we interviewed basketball team captain, Derek Guiher, to find out his thoughts about the team this year. We asked him how he feels about being one of the captains and the responsibilities that come along with it. He shared, “It’s definitely a good feeling to be a captain this year along with Austin and Rylan. We just have to set the tone for practice and games.”
The Squire also asked him his goals for the year for himself and the team. He explained that for himself he wanted to, “…play as well as possible and work hard every day. I definitely want to try to beat my three-point record again.” As for the team goals, he explained, “We definitely want to win the district championship and go as far as possible in state playoffs.” He also added the transition with Youngsville went very smoothly and that they bring some good talent to the team, really benefitting the team as a whole.
Moving on to wrestling, The Squire interviewed captain Bryceton Wilkins to learn more about his thoughts on the season and being a captain. He said, “For the most part, it makes no difference. I do try and motivate the team and to be in a leading position, but I’m lucky that everyone else does the same.” We also asked him about both his goals and the team’s goals going into this season. As for his personal goals, he commented, “I’d like to make regions. If I do, I get my name up on the wall in the wrestling room and that’s really important to me. I want to make a lasting impact on Eisenhower athletics.” As for team goals, “We have a few duals this year that come to mind that we want to win, like the home dual against Warren.”
The Squire would like to thank Derek and Bryceton for their time. Good luck to both our basketball team and our wrestling team. Stay tuned to W-IKE News for sports updates and come out to support the Knights this winter season.
