It can be hard to stay fit in summer, so The Squire has some tips for you to keep in shape during the off season. There are many places to help you stay fit, with one of the best places being the Warren YMCA.
When The Squire asked avid gym goer Joseph Gigliotti about the YMCA, he stated that, “The YMCA is pretty much everything you need from a gym. It offers a weight room, Nautilus room, indoor track, swimming pool, and much more.”
There are also many other great options available locally, with another great option being Planet Fitness in Lakewood, New York. Planet Fitness offers the most affordable option with free summer memberships for high school students and could be a great option for people that live near the New York border.
Another good option in Warren is S&C Powerplant. This local gym is an excellent option for the more experienced lifters, and for anyone that is looking for tanning options.
Gigliotti shared his tips for staying fit, explaining, “Cardio is one of the most important factors to weight loss. A couple examples of cardio are running, swimming and biking. Another thing that is important while staying fit is lifting” Gigliotti went on to explain, “Lifting makes you stronger and makes you look lean.”
One way to stay fit outside of the gym is sticking to a healthy diet. Gigliotti added, “Diet is key for you to be able to look and perform your best”. Another great option for staying fit that doesn’t require a gym is heading outside for a run.
While trying to stay fit, be sure to be safe. As Gigliotti explained, “…make sure you stretch so you do not injure yourself.” One thing you want to do while lifting is to make sure to stay hydrated because without hydration you can cramp, and that may lead to an injury. Another mistake that is commonly made is ego lifting, which is lifting more weight than you should be, and this can lead to more severe injuries. The last mistake that is commonly made is dieting the wrong way, so make sure you choose your nutrition goals based on what’s best for you and your body.
With all that being said, staying fit all year round, including the summer, can benefit your overall health and well-being. The Squire would like to thank Joseph Gigliotti for answering our questions. To be sure you’re ready for the upcoming athletic seasons, be sure to keep yourself in shape during the off season!
