On Sunday, February 9, 2025, at 6:30, Super Bowl LIX (59) kicked off, in which the Kansas City Chiefs (15-2) took on the Philadelphia Eagles (14-3) in the Super Bowl for the second time in three seasons. The Chiefs were on their way to possibly win their third Super Bowl in a row, while the Eagles were looking for redemption from Super Bowl LVII (57).
The Squire interviewed Eisenhower football player and Eagles fan, Logan Penley. When asked whether he thought the Eagles would win, he commented, “I knew the Eagles would be able to win; they were dominant all season, and they had the plays and staff to make it happen.”
The Chiefs won the coin toss and chose to defer the choice to the second half. Given the choice for the first half, the Eagles elected to receive the ball first.
The game started off slowly, with each team punting once due to their strong defenses before the Eagles got the ball back. On Philadelphia’s second drive of the game, they had a few big plays, including a 20-yard catch by tight end, Dallas Goedert, moving the Eagles to midfield almost immediately. Later in the drive on 3rd and 5, a 15-yard Unnecessary Roughness penalty kept the drive alive. A few plays later, quarterback, Jalen Hurts threw a perfect 27-yard pass to Jahan Dotson, setting the Eagles up for a touchdown from the one-yard line. The Eagles ran their infamous, “Tush Push” play, resulting in Hurts scoring his first touchdown of the game, and the Eagles never looked back.
Kansas City went on to punt again after this and the Eagles got the ball back. The Eagles looked to be putting another successful drive together when the first quarter ended. Philadelphia started off the second quarter in a good position at the Chiefs’ 34-yard line. The second play of the quarter went poorly with Jalen Hurts throwing an interception to Chiefs safety, Bryan Cook. The Chiefs went three and out for the second time and were forced to punt for the third time.
The Eagles got the ball back in good field position and were able to kick a field goal to go up 10-0. The Chiefs’ next drive ended in a disaster. After being sacked twice, Patrick Mahomes was forced into a passing third down. Mahomes made a serious error, getting picked off by Philadelphia corner back Cooper Dejean. Playing on his birthday, Dejean was able to return the interception for a touchdown. The Chiefs and Eagles both punted the ball once and the Chiefs got the ball back with under two minutes left in the half.
Mahomes threw another interception, this time to linebacker, Zack Baun. This set Philadelphia up inside the redzone and, two plays later, Hurts threw a touchdown pass to wide receiver, A.J. Brown. The Chiefs were forced to punt one more time before the end of the half. The Eagles got the ball back and ran out the rest of the clock, going into the half winning 24-0.
The Halftime Shows was headed by Kendrick Lamar with an appearance from SZA. Check out Squire staff member, Hayden Hendricks’ article, “Kendrick Lamar Sends a Message” to find out more about the show.
The Chiefs received the ball to start the second half and were forced to punt again. Philadelphia received the punt and were able to drive to the Chiefs 11-yard line before being stopped. On 4th and 11, Eagles kicker, Jake Elliott, made his second field goal of the game. Kansas City struggled again on their next drive, and they decided to go for it on 4th and 4. They did not get it, and the Eagles got the ball back already on the Chiefs 46-yard line.
On the first play of the drive, Hurts threw a deep touchdown pass to wide receiver, Devonta Smith for a 46-yard touchdown. The extra point was good, and Philadelphia went up 34-0. The Chiefs started the drive with a 50-yard pass from Mahomes to Chiefs’ receiver Xavier Worthy. They continued moving down the field and were able to score their first points of the game on another deep pass to Worthy. They went for two and failed to get it, making the score 34-6.
The Eagles started the fourth quarter with the ball and drove down the field again. They were unable to score a touchdown and settled for a field goal extending their lead to 37-6. Kansas City got the ball back but on the first play of the drive defensive end, Milton Williams, forced Mahomes to fumble. Williams recovered the ball for Philadelphia. After starting at the Chiefs 33-yard line the Eagles failed to score a touchdown. They kicked another field goal and extended their lead to 34.
The Chiefs got the ball back starting at their own 25-yard line. They were able to put together their second good drive of the game. On 3rd and 6 from the Eagles 7-yard line, Mahomes found wide receiver, Deandre Hopkins, in the endzone for a touchdown. On the two-point conversion, Mahomes found, receiver, Justin Watson making the score 12-40.
On the next drive the Eagles put their backups into the game with only three minutes left. They were unable to do anything with the ball and turned it over on downs. Kansas City started their next drive at the 50-yard line. On their first play, Mahomes threw a deep pass to Worthy, for his second touchdown of the game. The Eagles got the ball back for the final time and were able to kneel the clock out securing a 40-22 victory.
Penley commented about what the Eagles did well saying, “They knew what their weak points were and knew not to rely on them. They also shut down Kansas City’s strong points and dominated the defensive line. They also made turnovers out of Kansas City’s mistakes.”
Jalen Hurts is named Super Bowl MVP with 221 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, 72 rushing yards, and one rushing touchdown. This is the Eagles second Super Bowl win.
