Despite the cold weather, winter sports are heating up, and The Squire is here with all the information you might be looking for to support athletics at Eisenhower this season. Our athletes in basketball and wrestling have been ready for this season and have high hopes of completing personal goals and helping their team succeed.
After losing five seniors, Johnny Palmieri; Kyler Black; Kris Bunk; Maysen Wonderling; and Colin Sobkowski, the boys basketball team needs players to step up and fill in those missing spots. To combat this loss to the roster, the team has gained three freshmen, Jacob Dunn; Brayden Frank; and Liam Wilson. The team also includes a strong junior high team that gives them something to look forward to in future seasons.
The Squire interviewed senior and captain, Case Seymour with a couple of questions about this basketball season.
When asked about what his goals are this season, Casey responded, “I hope to make it to state playoffs, and maybe even get the home court advantage.”
Casey also stated that the team may face some challenges this year. For example, competing against private schools, which may be a challenge because they are usually very good.
The Eisenhower varsity girls basketball team also has high hopes for their season. They have played a couple of games already, with a few being rescheduled due to weather. The team had a rocky start, struggling to get enough players to be eligible to play. Despite this, they are still a strong team and will hopefully do great this season.
The Squire also interviewed Lainey Font, who is a player on the team, and they asked her how having such few players has affected them so far this season. Lainey stated that, “The low numbers challenge us in many ways, but we have learned to overcome it by conditioning more.”
Lastly, the boys and girls varsity wrestling teams lost a couple of seniors and gained a couple of freshmen. Their team is looking strong this year, and they hope to win their matches and place in some tournaments. The Squire also interviewed wrestler, Corey Bunce to find out what tips he has for new wrestlers and how they can get better.
Corey explained that they should practice hard, watch videos of experienced wrestlers, think about doing moves before matches, and practice some moves in free time.
So, the winter season sports teams are looking forward to this season. With ups, downs, gains, and losses, our teams are looking confident, and we hope to see them succeed.
