The Squire Reviews 2024

By: Bryce Coleson

Since 2024 is wrapping up, The Squire decided to do a year in review to share the top songs, movies, trends and sports. The Squire conducted online research, along with in-person polls and social media surveys to find out more about what our students feel are some of the most popular trends of the year.

According to Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube, the top song of 2024 was “We Can’t be Friends” by Ariana Grande. The top rap song of 2024 was “Houdini” by Eminem, while the top Hip-Hop song was “WATCHU KNO ABOUT ME” by Sexyy Red. The top country song of 2024 was “World on Fire” by Nate Smith. The top artist overall was, of course, Talyor Swift, whose Eras Tour was a popular world-wide musical event. Our social media followers also included some honorable mentions of “Wildflower” by Billie Elish and “Casual” by Chappell Roan.

Now on to a 2024 reflection in sports. As in many years, sports had a huge influence from the players to the expansion of women’s basketball. But before we talk about players, we should talk about the championship teams. The Kansas City Chiefs beat the 49ers in the Super Bowl presented by the NFL. The NBA Finals were won by the Boston Celtics in five games against the Dallas Mavericks. The MLB World Series was also decided in five games with the LA Dodgers beating the New York Yankees. The NHL Stanley Cup was won in seven games by the Florida Panthers, who beat the Edmonton Oilers. Also, in 2024 the Olympics were held in Paris, France. Team U.S.A. brought home 40 gold medals, 44 silver and 42 bronze medals.

2024 was a big year for movies. When The Squire interviewed Mr. Penley’s homeroom, the popular favorite was Twisters. Twisters came in eighth for the most watched movie of 2024, with the top movie being Inside Out 2 and, in close second, was Deadpool and Wolverine.

Each year comes with its own popular trends, and 2024 is no exception. The top internet search trends were election related, followed by the soccer World Cup. The common worst trend, according to the older generation, was “brainrot,” and, when the younger students were asked, they said baggy or sagging jeans were the worst pop culture trends. A couple other worst trends according to our Instagram followers include the “just give me my money” trend on TikTok and Birkenstock Clogs.

2024 was a year to remember. With a world population of 8,194,723,570, there have been 127,881,693 births in 2024. As of December 1, the most subscribed YouTube channel is Mr. Beast with 337 million subscribers. During 2024, the most popular girl name in the U.S. was Olivia, while the most popular boy name was Noah.

With 2024 coming to a close, be on the lookout for what might be trending in 2025. Thanks to all our followers who participated in the surveys and online polls.
