Boys Winter Sports Winding Down

By: Joseph Gigliotti

As we are now midway through the winter sport season, basketball players and wrestlers are working at the peak of their seasons for playoff spots and rankings. The boys basketball team currently has a winning record and is seeking to win the region for the first time in many years.

The Squire interviewed senior guard, Maysen Wonderling, asking him what strategies Coach Mangini uses. He explained, “Coach has many plays for different teams. He believes that some skills bench players have stack up against different defenses, so he plays them more.” The Squire also asked him what his goal is for this season, and he shared, “A D10 championship would be awesome.” Wonderling also described the team’s strengths and weaknesses, “Our team is good at running the floor and fast breaks, as well as a solid defense. Our weakness is coming out of the third quarter cold, giving up runs, and rebounding…”

The Boys basketball team is finding success after several re-building seasons, while wrestling has consistently been one of Eisenhower’s most successful programs. The Knights are known for their dedication and skill on the mat. Senior, Tucker Lindell, and junior, Griffin Williams, are both returning region qualifiers. They look to get back to that spot again with all their teammates.

The Squire interviewed senior wrestler, Derek Childs, and asked him how he prepares himself before every match, and he responded with, “I prepare myself for each match by getting in the right state of mind, listening to music and getting a good warmup in.” Being in the right state of mind can boost your confidence and get you ready to get the win. Childs also shared his goal for the season explaining, “The ultimate goal for this season is to better myself each match and make it further in the postseason and get to the big stage.”

This season, make sure to pop out to games and matches that are posted on the EHS Pig Pen page on Instagram. Make sure to dress according to the theme and don’t forget to wish the team’s good luck.
