Soaring through November 9: A Book Review

By: Leah Morrison

As her young life becomes more confusing than she ever imagined, Fallon, with her life still a mess, meets Ben. Ben is a young aspiring novelist, trying to get his life together, confused and scared, until he meets Fallon. With Fallon moving across the country to further her career, Ben decides that he wants to be with her during her final time in Los Angeles. Ben believes that, although Fallon was severely burned two years prior, which potentially ended her acting career for good, he can change their relationship completely. For the next three years their lives change and grow but they never fail to meet on November 9 of every year until Fallon’s 23 birthday. There is romance, heartbreak, suspense, and many emotions throughout the novel November 9 by Colleen Hoover.

For this book review, The Squire asked Mrs. Elms, a math teacher and avid reader at Eisenhower Middle High School, a few questions about the novel.

The Squire: What really piqued your interest in reading the novel November 9?

Mrs. Elms: I was listening to my sixth period students discuss the author Colleen Hoover and I remembered I had three of her books at home. I just picked one from my dresser over Thanksgiving break.

TS: What is one thing that you, as the reader, truly enjoyed about this novel?

Elms: [I enjoyed] the sudden twist in the middle that I did NOT see coming!

TS: What is one thing that you would change about the novel had you written the ending to this story?

Elms: I would not change a thing! It is seriously one of the best books I have ever read.

TS: If you could write the title of this book, what would you call it and why?

Elms: I think the title was perfect. Once you have read the book, the date November 9 was very significant for so many reasons.

TS: What were the emotions you went through while reading this novel?

Elms: I went through all the emotions – happy, excited, angry, shocked, and, finally, satisfaction! When the book takes the CRAZY turn in the middle, I was almost mad I even started reading it, but the ending made it worth it!

The Squire would like to thank Mrs. Elms for taking the time out of her busy teaching schedule to answer our questions. If you think that this book is just for you, you can find it at Eisenhower’s school library, and it is also available at Walmart. For more popular books written by Colleen Hoover, she has many novels, including Heart Bones, Layla, It Ends With Us, It Starts With Us, Verity, and so many more.
