The winter season is here. Snow is falling, and Christmas movies are ready to be watched. Movies are a big part of the holidays, with people waiting each season for the new Christmas movies to come out.
While watching Christmas movies are a good way to relax and enjoy the holidays, they are not the only type of movie that can be enjoyed. As The Squire interviewed students about their movie preferences, we learned that many different people like other genres better than the holiday movies, including freshman Austin Hanson, who explained, “My favorite movie genre is action, as I can’t get bored watching a movie…” Although Christmas movies are great types of movies to watch they may not be everyone’s favorite.
Even people who aren’t the biggest fan of Christmas movies usually enjoy spending the cold months watching a festive film. Christmas movies are very popular, and many people have different favorites. According to Rotten Tomatoes, their top three movies ranked in order were:
1. Meet Me in St. Louis– A classical comedy and holiday movie from 1904 that focuses on four sisters’ education in the ways of the world who also learn about life and love.
2. The Shop Around the Corner– Two employes that work at a general store who are secretly pen pals and fall in love.
3. The Holdovers- The new movie is about a school instructor who is forced to stay on campus to babysit students over Christmas break.
The Squire’s staff and Eisenhower students have more to add to the list. Hanson’s favorite movie is Home Alone, as he explained, “…I find it funniest, and it was the first Christmas movie I ever watched.” Keep reading to find out more about The Squire’s favorite movies.
1.Elf– An elf that runs away from the North Pole after finding out he isn’t a real elf goes to New York to find his real Dad.
2.National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation– The Griswold’s wanting to have a perfect Christmas and everything starts to go downhill until the protagonist gets his bonus and is very disappointed after he didn’t get the amount he wanted.
3.Home Alone– A family leaves their kid behind when they go to Paris. Kevin, who is left home alone, must keep the robbers away from him and his house while his family is in Paris.
Movies are watched all year long no matter the season, but there is some debate about whether Christmas movies should be watched year-round. While some movie watchers love holiday movies, no matter the season, Hanson shared that he prefers to watch, “… Christmas movies should only be watched at Christmas, because they’re Christmas movies.”
This winter, check out streaming services like Netflix and Hulu, along with channels, such as Hallmark, that feature movies to get you in the holiday spirit. Let The Squire know which Christmas movies make the top of your list.
