A new school year means new teachers, and, this year, Eisenhower has had new teachers in classrooms all around the school. For this issue’s teacher spotlight, The Squire has chosen Ms. Myschisin, our new gym teacher, to get a little bit of an insight on who she is and what she is like.
The Squire: How did you start teaching at Eisenhower?
Ms. Myschisin: So initially I was interested in coaching at Youngsville…and that didn’t really play out because there weren’t enough students for a team. I was kind of encouraged to apply for other jobs in the district, so, when I saw this job was posted, I decided to apply because I have always been really interested in sports and athletics. I studied environmental science and agricultural vindication in college and within my agricultural classes. I loved the food and nutrition portions of things so that kind of ties in with health. It took my interest from all different courses – my interest in agriculture, my interest in coaching sports and athletics and fitness.
TS: What/who was your inspiration to become a gym teacher?
Ms. M: I had awesome gym teachers throughout high school I also had good coaches. My gym teacher was aways finding new ways to engage students, like she was constantly writing grants to get money to support our gym and health programs at the school. So we had bikes and walking sticks, and we would do different things like that. I guess I saw her passion for it. Teaching in general, though, I found out I really liked it when I was in college. I had very few different internships and I realized how much I like working with people and students.
TS: If you chose not to be a teacher, what kind of career would you be pursuing?
Ms. M: So prior from being a teacher I have always wanted to be a dentist. That was like I have always wanted to be when I was five, I was like “I am going to be a dentist!” Then, when I was in college, I enjoyed my biology and chemistry classes and stuff like that. I knew I loved science, but I did not know what kind of science I really enjoyed.
TS: What is the main reason you decided to teach?
Ms. M: I have a passion for getting students to reach their full potential and really find themselves.
TS: How are you liking being at Eisenhower so far?
Ms. M: I like it here. It is similar to where I grew up, so that’s kind of comforting. But everyone has been welcoming and helpful, so that’s nice. I am enjoying the classes I have. I have nineth grade health, sixth grade physical education and elementary gym.
TS: As the gym teacher, what advice would you give students about leading active, healthy lives?
Ms. M: I think one of my biggest things is students should find time to exercise throughout the day…take the time to go outside and move your body. Don’t be afraid to try new things, like if there is a sport you are interested in, don’t be afraid to try that sport out and put yourself out there.
That wraps up our interview with Ms. Myschisin. When you see her walking in the hall, make sure to say hello and make her feel welcome! The Squire would like to thank her for taking the time out of her schedule to answer these questions so that we can all know her a bit better.
